Savenor’s

Savenor’s Market has been a Boston family tradition for more than 75 years. First opened in 1939 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the gourmet butcher shop and high-end grocer made a name for itself through its commitment to providing customers with the finest meats and produce anywhere in the world. Once frequented by Rockefellers, Kennedys and Schlesingers, the retailer’s brand recognition reached a pinnacle with the help of America’s first celebrity chef, Julia Child. A loyal customer long before she became a household name, she continued to source all of the meats for The French Chef throughout the 11 year run of her popular PBS show. As any fan of the show could attest, Jack Savenor was frequently mentioned on-air, in addition to making several guest appearances as Julia’s beloved butcher.

Ron Savenor, who currently heads both the retail and wholesale operations, took over the tradition from his father, Jack, with whom he credits creating the Savenor’s of today. Jack joined his parents’ business in 1940 at the age of eighteen, and eventually took over after his father’s death in 1942. Originally a basic grocery store, Jack expanded the business to include prime meats, imported patés, exotic game, fresh seafood and specialty foods to meet area demand. Largely as a result of Cambridge’s burgeoning foodie population, the store thrived, becoming renowned as one of the finest gourmet grocers in the world. In 1987, Ron took over the store from his father and ran it in Cambridge until 1992.

Basil Tree Catering

People often ask: How did Basil Tree Catering get started? Surprisingly the owner, Valerie Shulock, did not have any formal culinary training. She did, however study Bio-Psychology with a specialty in Nutrition and Behavior as an undergrad at Tufts University. Later, while working on her Masters in Management of Human Services at Brandeis University, she took the advice of the head of the program and left school to carry out a business plan she had created for a class.

In 1987, Val enlisted the help of her friends and co-workers, Irene and Carlos Carvalho, and launched Basil Tree Inc. In a small, shared kitchen in Somerville, they prepared unique pasta salads for area cafes and take-out markets; an idea that soon evolved to include catering. The catering became so popular that they decided to eliminate the wholesale aspect of the business altogether.

Basil Tree is now located in the Fresh Pond area of Cambridge. Basil Tree recently received official certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise as well as an LGBT Business Enterprise and continually works to support other underrepresented groups in the local community.

I was skeptical when my daughter suggested we order the pork roast for this week since I can make pot roast.  Boy am I glad we did!  It was so so delicious.  Juicy, flavorful, veggies firm but well cooked and there will be leftovers for tomorrow too! Such a good value and my family is left satisfied and happy!

Michelle B.

Bountiful delivers amazing, filling, healthy meals each night. The service is impeccable and meals are consistently delicious. Has made life so much easier, especially for a household with two busy professionals. Would recommend to anyone and everyone!

Chicken was PERFECTLY mouthwateringly cooked. This is such a welcome change from ordering the same old Chinese food. The food is first-class – and I’m a foodie. Love the connection to the local farms.
